2024 Florence Tram System – Line 3.2.2 Libertà-Rovezzano

The Line 3.2.2 from Libertà Square to Rovezzano area has an extension of approximately 6.2 km with 15 stops. The beginning of the line  connects to the Florentine tram system in tree-lined avenue Don Minzoni, continues along the tree-lined avenue Mille, up to the historic football stadium and the green areas and other important sports facilities, and turns south, to continue on tree-lined avenue Malta and joins the Mamiani-Duse-Verga axis until the turn onto Gignoro road which is followed up to Vitelli street, then continues on Chimera street, reaching the terminus at the Rovezzano railway station.

WHAT

The Landscape project verified the landscape compatibility of the project as a whole by drafting the Landscape Report, evaluating the main works and interventions planned along the entire line in relation to the landscape constraints and the Regional Territorial Direction Plan with Landscape Plan Value of the Tuscany Region.

For the Green Works, in order to improve the aspects relating to the management of existing trees affected by the tramway works, a knowledge framework was drawn up with a survey of the existing trees and their dimensional and positioning survey. 1,526 existing trees were surveyed, of which 428 are planned to be cut down, while the remaining 1,098 trees are planned to be maintained. To compensate for the felling, 506 new trees are planned. With a total final balance of 1,604 trees (+78 trees compared to the current state), in addition to ground cover and shrub plants, hedges and shrub strips and lawn areas.

Furthermore, the project includes the creation of a sedum grassy surface in some sections of the tramway.

The new green arrangement certainly represents the chance of defining new urban identities and, at the same time, of designing a green arrangement more suited to the new mobility needs, renewing both the phytosanitary aspects and those of stability of the trees currently present, as well as integrating the existing tree structure with new plants that are more efficient in providing ecosystem services and, in perspective, longer-lived.
