The National Association of Wine Cities, already in 1997 believed that the rural landscape could no longer be entrusted to spontaneous economic dynamics, but should be subject to a land planning, no more and no less than the urban settlement areas.
The landscape is a common good of the history and culture of a territory; it is a key factor in the competitiveness also in terms of tourism; the protection of the rural landscape, therefore, is not mere conservation, but must take into account the changing times and must also be intended as environmental protection.
Much has happened since 1997: the European Landscape Convention of 2000 (Italian National Act nr.14/2006) began a long process to sediment in the soul of the decision makers, but also in the common sense of people, the idea that the landscape is an everyone’s heritage. An update of the idea born as the Wine Cities Master Plan was therefore needed and this volume is the result of this update, a work of research and comparison among many public bodies and private companies that lasted two years.
