The Monteferrato area is part of the hilly-mountainous system that crowns the Florence-Prato-Pistoia plain to the north and falls entirely within the Province of Prato for an extension of 4,486 hectares divided within the boundaries of the Municipalities of Montemurlo, Prato and Vaiano. It is certainly not a “wild” or absolutely natural area, but rather a typically Tuscan hilly-mountainous landscape, rich in historical and cultural testimonies linked to the productive cycles of the land and intertwined with valuable naturalistic elements, historical-artistic emergencies and numerous rural architectures of notable beauty.

The idea of the protected area dates back a long time and has developed over the years, allowing not only an evolution and awareness among the “people” of the idea and institution of the protected area, but also the availability of all those tools necessary to create an active protected area. With the approval of the Master Plan and the regulations and with the establishment of the management body, a long but necessary early stage has been concluded and a new season of concrete protection activities, environmental recovery and involvement of the populations has begun. In this volume are collected all the analyses and the proposals for the plan, to offer to the citizens, the technicians, the economic operators and the administrators not only a complete information on what has been done, but also a useful tool for the daily work of protection now and for the coming years.
