Desertification, land degradation and drought occur in all regions of the world, affecting the landscape, impacting on agricultural production and leading to hunger and poverty, it drives unemployment, forced migration and conflict, while increasing the risk of extreme weather related to climate change. Globally, 24% of the land is degrading and about 1.5 billion people directly depend on these degrading areas. Nearly 20% of the degrading land is cropland, and 20-25%, rangeland. The livelihoods of more than 1 billion people in some 100 countries are threatened by this phenomenon.
It is also expected that continuing land degradation will drive 700 million people out of their homes. Therefore, land degradation issue became a matter which requires an immediate attention thus the need for this book to contribute to the wealth of knowledge for our future survival.
This book which is based on the contributor’s expertise gives case studies on how to deal with the challenges of desertification, land degradation and drought at the various regions affected by it, through traditional knowledge as well as scientific methods that can support resilience at the local scales.
